It was quite a summer for Serbia's Ivana Spanovic and Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson - and now they face each other in this seaside setting of Sopot.

Not that there will be much time for any winter sun this weekend, because all the heat will be on the intensity of their event, the long jump at the IAAF World Indoor Championships.

As the competition opened in Poland on Friday morning, Spanovic and Johnson-Thompson were putting the finishing touches to their preparations.

Their qualifying is on Saturday morning with the final on Sunday afternoon, and for both of them it could be a seminal few days.

Serbia had never won a medal at the World Championships before Spanovich, 23, wrote herself into their national sporting history with her bronze in Moscow in August.

It was a brilliant performance, a jump of 6.82m in the fifth round which broke the national record and was only 19 centimetres adrift of the winning distance by American Brittney Reese. She was also just 17 centimetres behind Blessing Okagbare, the silver medallist from Nigeria who is here in Sopot.

Okagbare might start as favourite because of last year but she has not jumped this year, while Spanovic is third on the world indoor lists with her 6.92m from Istanbul last month, with Russia's Svetlana Birkyukova top of the rankings with 6.98m and another major contender.

Fifth in those rankings with 6.75m is Johnson-Thompson, who might have expected to be competing on the first day in the invitation-only pentathlon, before illness curtailed her plans.

But Sopot will be another key competition for the British multi-eventer who is following in the footsteps of Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Last summer, Johnson-Thompson, 21, was one of the stars of the European Athletics Under-23 Championships in Tampere when she won the heptathlon with 6215, 12 months on from winning long jump gold at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona.

After her success in Tampere, she then finished fifth in the heptathlon in Moscow, showing signs of what the future might bring.

Now in Sopot, she could be vying for a spot on the podium among the seniors.
