With less than 500 days before the first competitions get underway, the Zurich 2014 European Athletics Championships organisers have announced the launch of stadium ticket sales. Preparations for the championships are at full speed and on schedule. “We are on track,” explained Zurich 2014 CEO Patrick K. Magyar at a media conference Monday at Letzigrund Stadium, the venue for the competitions to be held 12-17 August 2014.

The European Athletics Championships Zurich 2014 will be a monumental event for the athletics community and the entire sports community of Switzerland. 1,400 athletes from 50 countries are expected to arrive in Zurich to compete in what will be a highlight of the athletics season. 370 million TV viewers are expected to follow the action from their homes, and an overall 250,000 visitors will be attending the 10 competition sessions scheduled for the championships.

In addition, tens of thousands will be cheering the athletes of the race walking and marathon events in the city centre of Zurich.

Weekly ticket packages now on sale
Public sales of the much sought-after Zürich 2014 week packages started Monday (http://www.zuerich2014.ch/en/group-1/tickets). During the past few months, members of Swiss Athletics and Zürich 2014 Friends have been able to order their week packages in a special pre-sale.

“So far, we have sold about 27,000 individual tickets equalling just a little over 20% of the tickets available for Swiss visitors”, explained Magyar, taking stock after the first phase of tickets sales. The Zürich 2014 week packages are in great demand, as they are offered at a very attractive price. In addition, all tickets include public transport fares for the journey to and from the stadium (within Switzerland). Tickets for seats in two family sectors are available at a discounted rate (50%) for children under 16 years of age.”

The transferable week packages allow buying tickets at an advantageous price, and will be available for purchase until the end of September 2013 only. A week package includes 10 individual tickets (one ticket per session. There will be morning and evening sessions from Tuesday to Friday), and can therefore be used by various visitors. As of November 2013 – once the competition timetable is finalised – sales of day passes will begin. Attending a full competition day at Letzigrund Stadium will be available at a minimum price of 95 Swiss francs (incl. public transport).

High Demand for Tickets, Small Stadium
During the championships, Letzigrund Stadium will be able to accommodate 25,000 spectators per day. Tickets for 17,650 seats will be on sale. However, 4,300 of these seats are reserved for international federations.

“Therefore, there will be just over 13,000 tickets available to the general public. A relatively small number when considering the dimension of the event,” explained Magyar.

Based on the experience of the number of tickets sold during the special pre-sale, he encouraged fans to secure their tickets as soon as possible: “By ordering week packages now, fans also benefit from a favourable price per ticket.”
